School, business or individual looking to purchase a new computer can save quite a bit of money by buying pre-owned, recently-off lease machines from a reputable dealer.
Business lease their Pcs for a period of time – usually 2 or 3 years. At the end of the lease, equipment arrives back to close the rent. Similar to a lease car (where you want to return the vehicle to your local entrepreneurs), the computer has the equipment to return processing The facility with normal wear and tear. In a car, that can mean quite a bit. But in a computer, the only significant "wear and tear" is the keyboard and mouse. Sure, moving elements within (ie the hard drive, CD-Rom, and floppy drives, and fans) are used, but about 95% elements still functioning properly.
Off-lease refurbs are NOT confused with factory refurbished equipment. Equipment to come back to the original equipment manufacturer (ie Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway, etc.) will get the refurb channel for a number of different reasons, but the most memorable customer returns. In other words, the goods will come back because the customer had a problem or not like what they got.
But how I know you which offers companies a good off-lease refurbs, and which are "lemons"?
FIRST – REFURBS CAN ONLY BE AS GOOD AS THE BRAND NEW equipment.
At that distance, my advice is stick to the "corporate grade" equipment ~ the Dell OptiPlex, the Compaq EVO, to name just a few. Stay clear anything "retail grade" Measures such as Dell, HP Pavilion, Compaq Presario. These PCs are designed for end-user, NOT business. If they are not good enough to run a business, why you want them?
Second – Stick MAY reputable BUSINESS.
Ask for references or reference. Find out how long they are evaluated in business and ask if they are a member of the Better Business Bureau. Check for complaints. The prevalence of eBay, buying old computer someone NOT anything like a professional buying refurbished, off-lease computers from a company that is nothing but refurb computers for a living. Stick with reputable businesses with a purpose.
THIRD – GET A FULL WARRANTY.
Settle for nothing less than a 1-year warranty, but ask for a 3-year coverage. But looking deeper still the length of the warranty. If the company offers a 3-year warranty, but has not been in business long, skip it. Move on.
Fourth – ASK FOR A test.
Some companies will actually allow you to "test drive" the their equipment before making a larger purchase / purchase / order. End-users looking for a personal computer for themselves will not get in on the offer test, but a business or school is looking to outfit their entire organization "as" machine is a good candidate for a test. Worst case – buy one. See how it looks. See how the company handles tech support (even without the hardware problems).
Finally – YOU THE purchase of the company, not just the PC.
The first quality of the PC is saying, but if you rely on the warranty, the real you are buying a company, not only the PC.
Bottom Line —
You can get one heck of a deal buying refurbished, off-lease computer equipment from the right dealer. Should can expect to save at least 50% off the grade corporate, brand new, 4th-grade Pentium PCs or 75% or more of the lessor machine (ie. if you have the equipment to an elementary school, you do not need a Pentium 4-class PCs – need reliable PCs that run the software run the regular).
