It was a blinding blizzard, quite frightening really when you cannot see anything but snow, while awful turbulence added to the unfolding nightmare. My hands were clammy and beads of sweat drenched my forehead as we were about to land at one of the most stressful airports in the world, from a pilot’s point of view anyway. This is because of the mountains that have to be cleared, although, apparently, it is more dangerous taking off than landing.
Now it was starting to hit me that what had begun as a great big joke for a fun day out had suddenly taken on a more serious turn as I realised that the toy I was playing in was NO flight simulator PC game…not with a price tag of £13,000,000 on its head.
All four of us took turns in flying and landing at various airports around the world and it truly was one of those unforgettable moments in our lives. We were very lucky and grateful people. It was quite a few years ago now in the mid 80′s, and our friend had invited us to London for a few days and the flight simulation was a surprise for us as she worked at an airport and we really did get the whole VIP treatment. It was an amazing experience.
What I couldn’t get over was how, down to the very last switch, the simulator was a perfect replica of a Boeing 707. Even more incredible were the scenery and runways, even the road lighting system was an exact copy. The trainer explained everything had to be and look as it would in real life so that, in the event of an accident, the pilots would know exactly what they would have to contend with which would obviously help them to make important decisions.
What was the most amazing thing of all? Incredibly, the man who trained the pilots, who put them through their paces, through every horrendous scenario possible and then trained them how to respond and react had NEVER flown a real plane in his life and didn‘t even have a pilot’s licence! Now that is amazing. Whether this is still the same now I don’t know.
