Marketing a Small Business Economically and Efficiently
|
One celebrated mistake of marketing by shrimp business owners is to tell everybody “how great their business is and what they are selling today”.
SELL BENEFITS!
This seems sensible enough, but the truth of the matter is that few people will stop and look at your advertising if that is the only message you are getting across. As you flick slowly through the internet, a newspaper or a magazine do you stop at many ads that say something like, “Just arrived today – the latest bread making machine”. Wouldn’t you feel remarkable more inclined to stop if the ad said, “Impartial arrived today – the latest bread making machine that automatically slices the cooled bread to your selected thickness, just right for novel sandwiches” (we wish). Can you see the difference here. One is just selling the product and the other is selling the benefits.
If you do not accomplish the effort to sell the benefits you are not putting your business ahead of your competitors who are probably only selling the product.
CHOOSING YOUR PROMOTIONAL PRODUCTS When you are setting up your marketing you need to be thinking of what you are going to promote in the next month or two. It may require that you seize specific items that are new to the market or it may mean that you buy up larger on a popular item that has been heavily reduced by the supplier, giving you a chance to promote a Special of ‘buy 2 for the price of 1′. Your regular customers would love to be able to buy one of their most used products at a cheaper price.
It may mean when planning your products for promotion that you run a grouping of products. Say, for a mower shop you may promote leaf blowers one month, weed trimmers the second month and mower the third. You may even link these together by giving a client who buys a leaf blower a voucher for discount off a weed eater to help bring them encourage next week.
MARKETING PLAN Thinking ahead like this is the very basics of a marketing plan. Plan products for the year ahead, perhaps focusing on seasons of the year, then choose products that you may be able to promote. If you work approximately 3 months ahead in detail as to costs and supply, then you will be organised and catch that you will not be just grabbing at the first opportunity that comes along when the first ad representative walks in the door. It is so critical not to advertise when you have not given sufficient thought to your wording.
VOUCHERS If you are going to use vouchers as part of your marketing DO REMEMBER TO SET A TIME LIMIT. This is so essential in today’s day and age where prices are changing at quite a rapid rate. Vouchers can be made out for a dollar value or on a percentage basis.
CHOOSING YOUR METHOD OF MARKETING Every business has a different need with their marketing and every business owner has different skills in promoting their business. I would stress that if marketing is not one of your strong points then hire someone to do it for you.
Businesses frequently fail because of lack of marketing. An owner might be the best mechanic in town, but if he doesn’t tell everyone then no-one will know.
