Half as Much is part two in a two-volume series that compiles Curley Williams’ complete Columbia recordings. It picks up in 1949 where the first volume, Just a-Pickin’ and a-Singin’, leaves off, and continues to the end of Williams’ tenure with the label in 1952. A smattering of alternate takes dating back to 1946 are included at the end of the program to fill out the disc. Williams was reputedly a notoriously — even comically — slow talker, which may help explain why the pace of his recordings is strangely relaxed for a string dance band. The anesthetized performances undercut novelties such as “Honey Do You Love Me — Huh?” and “No Not Now,” which should be sprightlier. Instead, there are moments when it seems as if Williams recorded his music moments before the sleeping pills took effect. Williams is known, above all, for composing the song “Half as Much,” a hit for Hank Williams and Rosemary Clooney, and Curley’s original version from 1951 appears on this anthology. Unfortunately, it is an unremarkable rendition of more historical interest than anything. Curley collaborated with Hank Williams on occasion, too, co-writing the two aforementioned novelty songs. Adding to the value for Hank Williams completists, the anthology presents a rare demo from 1949 of Hank and Curley singing “No Not Now.” Like the first volume, Half as Much contains a variety of instrumentals, boogies, ballads, and novelties with a regional sensibility reflected in the many prominent references to Southern states. A telling quotation printed on the back of the CD package suggests that Mitch Miller, Columbia’s A&R man, had never heard of Curley Williams even though Curley had been a Columbia recording artist for seven years. Upon opening the CD case of So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter, one is greeted with a picture of an automobile shop with a sign reading, “We Believe in God — America — Trucks.” One imagines that Ani DiFranco and her fellow New Yorkers find a number of similar sentiments as their progressive folk show travels across small-town America. Despite such nativist impulses, DiFranco also finds a warm, responsive audience wherever she travels. Her first live album in five years, So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter documents the Righteous Babe in a number of settings, captured between September 2000 and April 2002. Like 1997′s Living in Clip, one can’t really hope to reproduce a DiFranco concert on a single disc. The performances are seamlessly sequenced, meaning one can put both discs in the CD changer, crank up the volume, and settle into the easy chair for a private show. Also like Living in Clip, DiFranco revels in boisterous crowds as she delivers fresh interpretations of familiar favorites (there’s a minimal overlap of material between the two discs). The material on each disc falls under a different umbrella. The first, “Stray Cats,” gathers a handful of set list standards, including “To the Teeth,” “Napoleon,” and “Swan Dive.” The second disc, “Girls Singing Night,” concentrates heavily on DiFranco’s feminist leanings, with pieces like “Ain’t That the Way,” “Reckoning,” and “Dilate.” What pulls everything together, regardless of theme or which disc is in the player, is DiFranco’s usual all-or-nothing vocals bolstered by her fabulous band. Even with familiar fare like “Letter to a John” and “Not a Pretty Girl,” keyboardist Julie Wolf, bassist Jason Mercer, and drummer Daren Hahn kick the intensity level up another notch. One more layer of icing is added to this multi-tiered sound when the horn section cuts loose on pieces like “32 Flavors.” The package is sweetened by the inclusion of a few rare pieces along with a new poem/song, “Self Evident,” written in response to the attack on the World Trade Center. So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter captures DiFranco and friends in vibrant form and shouldn’t be missed. ~ Ronnie D. This choice chapter in the Memphis Slim story delivers an exciting taste of what a modern electric blues band sounded like in live performance during the early ’70s. This reissue includes a bonus track featuring Hammond B-3 organist Deacon Jones and formidable electric guitar wizard Freddie King. (It’s quite a package, although even with this extra cut the disc only contains 43 minutes of music.) The year 1973 was particularly exciting as blues, soul, funk, and rock & roll began to blend in ways that had only been hinted at during the 1960s. This cultural explosion was inevitable as music festivals were expanded to include a wide range of styles and genres. The 1973 Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival, for example, featured One String Sam, Victoria Spivey, Roosevelt Sykes, John Lee Hooker, and Ray Charles on the same weekend as Yusef Lateef, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, and the Sun Ra Arkestra. The 1973 jazz festival held in Montreux, Switzerland, underwent comparable dilation as Odetta, Fats Domino, Muddy Waters, and Professor Longhair appeared alongside Miles Davis, Les McCann, Sam Rivers, and Stéphane Grappelli. Memphis Slim fit perfectly into this mind-blowing lineup. Backed by bassist Benny Turner, drummer Charlie Meyers, and guitarist Joe “Jammer” Wright, Slim rises to the occasion, maintaining at all tempos a powerful presence that is still breathtaking. Most amusing is Slim’s politically charged “The Watergate Festival,” juxtaposing the seemingly disparate topics of a fertile international music festival scene and the corruption scandal that was steadily disembowelling the Nixon White House during the summer of 1973. This track compares nicely with similar Watergate “tributes” composed and/or recorded by Eddie Shaw, Tom T. It must mean something that a rapper whose debut sold over 500,000 copies on a major label needs to move to an independent label to release his third album. Yet such is the case for Philadelphia’s Freeway, who signed to indie stalwart Rhymesayers (home of Brother Ali, Atmosphere, and P.O.S) for The Stimulus Package, a record that barely resembles the label’s others albums, and features verses from Raekwon, Beanie Sigel, Bun B, and Birdman, and, in fact, whose only sign of the Minneapolis imprint is full production from Jake One, who also contributed a track to Freeway’s 2007 Def Jam release Free at Last. Rhymesayers is clearly going for the mainstream hip-hop crowd that’s grown tired of the infrequency of quality releases coming from the majors, but isn’t quite ready to embrace backpacker status. And The Stimulus Package, in fact, is the perfect album for this transition, a smart yet hard-edged record that stays with you. Much of this is due to Jake One, whose production credits range from G-Unit to Strange Fruit Project, and whose versatility allows Freeway room to focus on his rhymes without having to worry about the constraint of his flow. (The rapper is clearly aware of Jake’s talents, as well: the album starts out with him telling Beanie Sigel to “let the beat breathe,” and the producer plays a starring role in the narrative of “Freekin’ the Beat.”) But Freeway himself more than holds up his own end, contributing lines that are as good as anything he’s done (“I got 99 problems but my rhyme is not a problem,” he says in “One Foot In,” a sly rip on his former label) — his nasally, Ghostface-esque voice blending well with Jake’s beats as he rhymes about everything from religion to hip-hop to sex to his own abilities to snitching to his fans. “Stimulus package” here doesn’t refer to money, at least not — despite the packaging — more than superficially. Sure, Freeway doesn’t shy away from talking about cash, but even when he does, he’s talking about more than that. “Money,” featuring Omillio Sparks and Mr. Porter, is less about getting rich than just paying the bills, and in “Follow My Moves,” while Birdman offers a relatively weak verse listing brand names and expensive items, Freeway addresses the idea of wealth with more nuance: “This is Birdman, and Philly Free, we are eating, getting money off of words man/Come a long way from flipping birds man,” less interested in the final result than by how he got there. The Stimulus Package is, in fact, at least as Freeway explains it in “Stimulus Outro,” about “all the fans giving this love and now we giving it back.” But it’s also a much-needed jolt that hip-hop — both mainstream and indie — needs, about bringing the best of both sides together into something that everyone can unite behind. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi Performers: Heather Houseman – Cello;

After years of yielding the spotlight to fellow Death Cabber Ben Gibbard, Chris Walla finally moves to center stage with Field Manual. Fans of Death Cab’s Transatlanticism (particularly the album’s second half, with its emphasis on ballads and slow-motion moodiness) will be pleased with this solo effort, since Field Manual delivers the same brand of reflective, mid-tempo indie pop. Even the faster songs seem to rarely break a sweat (with the exception of standout track “The Score”), and their quickened pace takes a backseat role to Walla’s gauzy vocals and politically minded lyrics. There’s nothing like “I’ll Follow You into the Dark” here, no song so adorably sweet and saccharine that teenagers will clamor to slow-dance to it at their high school proms. Instead, Walla targets the head — not the heart — while delivering songs about crooked senators, sustainability, and American soldiers. “All hail an imminent collapse,” he sings on the first track, opening the album with several seconds of layered a cappella. “You can fumble for your maps, but we’re exhausted by the facts.” The political commentary is sharp, and Walla smartly refuses to channel the “Rise up!” spirit of someone like Bruce Springsteen, since an indie pop release simply couldn’t bear that kind of weight. But given the album’s release date — at the tail-end of January 2008, as senators and governors vie for presidential candidacy — Field Manual still comes across as surprisingly intelligent, its political themes bolstered by the multi-instrumental skills that Walla honed with Death Cab. He tackles most of the instruments himself, adding occasional bits of electronic percussion to a mix of electric guitars, piano, organ, and standard rhythm. If there’s one weak point in this performance, it’s the fact that Walla’s voice rarely breaks out of the background-vocals mould. He can certainly sing, but years of providing seamless harmonies for Gibbard have given his pipes a clear, breathy quality that threatens to lull the listener into a trance during the album’s final stretch. Still, Field Manual is a very nice public bow from someone who, prior to 2008, spent much of his time in the production booth and/or on the sidelines.
