The Limitations of Social Media Marketing

Social media marketing is definitely the next big thing in business marketing. As more and more people flock to the internet to get ideas, shop for stuff, and to simply hang out, getting your business noticed with social media marketing is definitely something to reflect.

But social media marketing has its limitations. It can’t encompass all of your business marketing. Let’s grasp a look at some of the limitations of social media marketing.

Social media marketing does not drive sales

The whole point of social media marketing is not to hard sell your products. It’s to interact with your customers and make them feel as if they are a part of your brand or your company.

Let’s say you’re putting a lot of time and effort into your Facebook marketing campaign. You’re not going to get anyone to pay attention to you on Facebook if all you do is talk about how great your products or services are. You’re on Facebook to entertain, spark interest, and get edifying with your customers. Not to hard sell products.

Although social media marketing may not directly drive sales, this can be overcome by leading members, followers, and friends to places where they Can Learn more about your products and services.

Social media marketing can be a time consuming waste of resources

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m guilty of putting too distinguished time into social media marketing. It can get addicting trying to bag more friends or followers and then interacting with them. If you’re not careful, you can spend too much time posting and interacting with people than you use doing more productive work. All in the name of social media marketing.

For example, I’ve been known to waste an entire day on business online forums. I’ve gotten so addicted to a discussion I kept popping back to peruse what’s going on. It’s gotten to the point I’ve had to disconnect my computer from the internet to stay on task.

Social media marketing takes a lot of time and attention to do correct

Yes, social media marketing can be a demolish of your business marketing resources if you’re not careful. But social media isn’t something you can create and forget, either. It requires constant attention to interact with others and drive traffic to your blog/profile/tweets. You must update daily with relevant, interesting content.

Unlike a sales letter, website, catalog, or other “classic” marketing techniques, social media marketing requires long term thought and dedication. If you’re going to spend time business marketing with Facebook, a blog, Twitter, or some other social media marketing platform, be prepared to dig in for the long haul.

All these drawbacks being said, social media marketing is a very fine way to do business marketing in certain industries. If your qualified customers are online, then do it. It could be the low-cost (but time consuming) way to drive sales to the next level.
