Heads Up! The Way You Are Killing sleep can be you! Each one of us has a mysterious double life. For about two thirds of the time we are conscious human beings, think about the world inside and out, and negotiate our way through life's obstacles. For other pieces of one third of the time we're almost dead meat, oblivious to everything but our own fantasies, like lying in bed asleep. We all know that sleep is important for health. But for an activity that consumes about eight hours of every day life, surprisingly little thought about the act of sleeping, or how our culture teaches us to sleep. Behavior Sleep, like all human activities, is defined by our culture. Sometimes the practices taught by our culture can influence how our bodies work. As medical anthropologists, ways to search our cultural practices may be affecting our health. And we discovered that the way we have been trained to sleep can be a major cause of various diseases that plague our society. Of course, when you consider the culture of sleep, including isues such as time to sleep, and time of day to sleep. You take frequent naps, or you sleep 8 hours straight? You sleep at night or during the day? Other issues of concern sleepwear. Do you sleep naked or with pajamas or lingerie? You sleep in your underwear? If the leaves be natural fabrics like cotton or silk, or polyester ok? And on the detergent and fabric softener used in sheets, pillowcase and PJ? If you eat before bed? What is the impact of watching television before bedtime? If you take sleeping pills to help you sleep? These are some of the culturally defined issues that help determine how the sleep, which may have some potential impact on health. However, there is a cultural issue that tops the list of importance, and that too can determine your state health. It has to do with your sleeping position. You're sleeping on a firm, flat, face down, with nose and eye pressed against the bed and pillow? Or you is back with his head slightly elevated, as is the case with many indigenous cultures that use nets or other non-flat surfaces for sleep? The reason we ask this last question is because the circulation to the head and brain is completely related to body position when sleeps. We all had a moment of experiencing dizziness or lightheadedness when getting out of bed too fast. This effect is called orthostatic hypotension, , and results from the fact that blood pressure drops when you lie down, and sudden elevation of the head can temporarily deprives the brain of sufficient pressure, resulting in dizziness or vertigo. Blood pressure rises rapidly, increasing the blood supply to the brain, how you feel normal again. That phenomenon shows that the severity of body position in relation to influences head and brain circulation. You can also demonstrate so doing a head stand, which many yoga practitioners of the day. Intracranial pressure increases dramatically as blood rushes to the head, which becomes red beet, and neck veins swell, as pools of blood in the venous system. But beyond these examples, very little or nothing is mentioned in the books of medical physiology about gravity and its impact on circulation. However, you can not fully understand the brain circulation, regardless of severity. The effect of gravity on brain circulation is purely mechanical, and refers to the head position in relation to the pumping of the heart. When standing, the head is above the heart, so the blood has to pump against the Force of gravity – from the heart to the brain – reducing effective pressure of the blood pressure is delivered to the brain. However, the blood draining from the brain to the heart is facilitated by gravity. In contrast, when we lie down and horizontal, the head and heart are already on the same plane. This eliminates the effects of gravity on the circulation brain. The heart pumps blood to the head powerfully without resistance of gravity, increasing intracranial pressure. And the blood returning from the brain to the heart must do it without help of gravity, causing a back up of blood in the brain. Essentially, the increased intracranial pressure, and decreases the movement total brain, when you are lying against the foot. Naturally, the body is intelligent and has mechanisms to control the pressure the brain in an emergency differently. When the brain is under pressure to lie, there are several pressure receptors in the head and neck designed to reduce blood pressure, thereby preventing the pressure of the brain very well as the ability to blow a blood vessel or the creation of an aneurysm brain. This is why the pressure is lower when we are sleeping, and horizontal. But these brain mechanisms to adjust the pressure has its limits. How we spent the day in an upright position, gravity pulls down inexorably body fluids, which is why many people have swollen feet and ankles to end of the day. Once we lie down, the effect of gravity is lost, as the fluid leaves the legs and back to the head. So even though our brains mechanisms normal defense during the night increases the intracranial pressure and higher in the morning, after hours of lying down, and lower at the end of the day, after hours of being vertical. What happens when intracranial pressure is high for long periods of lying? Increased blood pressure causes cerebral spinal fluid in the ventricles to form extra the brain, increasing the pressure of fluid in the brain. The ventricles swell and the brain cells become awash in excess fluid, essentially causing edema brain. This edema could decrease the amount of available oxygen and sugar to the brain cells. The lack of assisted gravity drainage of the brain cause a back-up of blood in the venous system and collection of brain cavities. The circulation of the brain that are relatively stagnant, as the only force moving through the blood would be pushing force of blood pressure (which is very low after traversing the cerebral circulation) and the suction force of the court right heart. And besides brain swelling under pressure, eyes, ears, face, breasts, gum – the whole head – will become pressurized and tissues congested with fluid! There is a field of medicine avidly studying this effect of gravity on physiology. This sub-specialty is Space Medicine. Astronauts in space are in a zero gravity field, and it is known that the blood makes the move to the head and brain, causing increased pressure in the brain and the accompanying headaches, glaucoma, Meniere's disease and other problems associated with a brain, pressurized congested. To study the negative effects of zero gravity here on earth, these space scientists have people lie! However, since medicine is so vast field, with sub-specialists in learning more and more about less and less, there little exchange of ideas between medicine and space medicine Earth-bound. Otherwise, someone would have realized that lying is what we do when we sleep. If this causes problems for astronauts, then it could cause problems for everyone else? We discovered this on space research while doing our own research positions in sleep as a possible cause of migraine. We hypothesized that sleeping too flat for a long time every night can lead to brain pressure and accumulation of fluid (edema) in brain tissue associated with hypoxia and hypoglycemia. The brain can not function well without a good amount of oxygen or sugar, and this condition would be at its worst in the morning, which is when most migraines occur. Although he was thought of as a migraine pathological phenomenon, it is also possible that migraine is a defense mechanism of the brain to receive new blood with the sugar and oxygen. After all, the only way the brain can achieve what he needs is the blood stream and arteries during a migraine head open and pump blood forcefully throughout the brain. Perhaps, we reasoned, migraine is a type of emergency "brain" flush, replacing the old with new blood. If so, could prevent migraine headaches suffer on account of sleeping with the head slightly elevated? We tested our theory by having about 100 volunteers migraineurs sleep with the heads of their beds elevated 10-30 degrees. raising the head, theorized that will improve cerebral circulation, providing some help from gravity for drainage. Interestingly, we found that the Space Medicine researchers found that the circulation of the brain (and heart pumping) is the ideal of a head 30 degrees of elevation of the bed. To our surprise, we found that the relief of the majority of migraineurs in our study experienced by this simple change of sleeping position! Many did not have migraines again, after suffering from migraine for 30 years or more! The results were very fast in a few days. And there were side effects very interesting too. Our volunteers woke up more alert. morning nasal congestion was significantly reduced for most people. Some reported that they no longer had certain allergies. We could have discovered the true purpose and cause of migraine? The implications of these results were, frankly, amazing for us. So many diseases are related to increased brain pressure "cause" unknown. sleep position has never been studied as the cause this increased pressure. The implications go far beyond the prevention and treatment of migraine. Any condition that is related to pressure brain, and that is usually worse in the morning after a night-time horizontal, can be potentially related to this issue and gravity position sleep. Keep in mind that the brain is the central nervous system control and modify all bodily functions. If certain brain centers are congested and pressurized days sleeping too flat for long hours, these centers can malfunction. Depending on how a person sleeps, the idiosyncrasies of their brains, and other variables, different people may experience this pressure in the brain differently. For some, the respiratory centers in the hypothalamus may be particularly congested, resulting in sudden infant death syndrome (which has been associated with head and body position during sleep), sleep apnea and even asthma. Sleep apnea has shown to be treatable with changes in sleep position. Strokes are clearly associated with the pressure of the brain, and usually occur at night or at dawn, while he slept. This is when the pressure of the brain is larger. Glaucoma is clearly caused by this mechanism. It is known that eye pressure increases when the head is down, and decreases when the head is up. It is essential to note the head position when taking eye pressure readings because of this delicate relationship between intraocular pressure and head position. eye pressure is also higher in early morning. Elevation of the head during sleep should be routine for glaucoma treatment and prevention. Baggy eyes and nasal congestion seem to be related to head pressure. As the brain begins to extra pressure when lying down, head and face are pressurized, too. People with these problems often find immediate relief sleeping elevated 10-30 degrees. Alzheimer's disease, we believe, could be the end of disease caused by cerebral congestion chronic pressure and sleeping apartment. The cerebral ventricles of the brain of Alzheimer's disease are expanded, suggesting a history of ventricular pressure, and widespread damage throughout the ventricles may indicate areas of brain tissue that has deteriorated from this chronic pressure. Other studies have shown the Alzheimer's disease is associated with increased brain pressure, but the question was considered unknown, as is the case with almost all the problems of pressure the brain. Note that the blood-brain barrier can not function properly when pressurized. excessive intracranial pressure can cause leaks in this barrier through the expansion of basement membrane, allowing heavy metals such as aluminum and mercury, as well as viruses and bacteria to enter the brain that would have been excluded. This may be because heavy metals have been associated with certain problems in the brain, like Alzheimer's. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity is also known to be associated with congestion in the center "push" within the brain that helps control behavior. We find several children with ADHD experience profound improvement of self-control, raising his head while he slept. In addition, the head position in relation to gravity, we also have found side or tummy to sleep can lead to problems. For example, we found several cases of carpel tunnel syndrome related to sleep in the hands or wrists, shoulder pain and sleeping on the side. And remember that the head increases the pressure and drainage decreases, when the head is rotated to the side. Sleeping in back prevents compression of the limbs and internal organs. It is also interesting to note that patients with asymmetry problems will usually be worst side to sleep. For example, the pathology of the eye will be worse in the eye side of the guy who is sleeping in the majority. Ear infections will be worse in the lower "ear. You can also tell the side of a person sleeps in observing the shape of the nose. Besides the injuries, the nose should be symmetrical, but becomes bent out of the pillow to sleep because of the side of his face and pressing the nose for hours each night. The nose point away from the side that most people are asleep. Men should be informed that sleeping on your side can result in compression and possible testicular dysfunction. And women who sleep on their sides or stomachs breasts subject to compression and poor circulation. Side sleepers may have more trouble breast-side in sleep. We warn the doctor, however, that while the effect the elevation of the head during sleep to be dramatic and processing for many patients and should be considered essential for prevention strategies disease, the fact is that many people resist changing their sleep behaviors. They have been conditioned to sleep in a certain way from birth. And even when they want to change the Your sleep position is difficult to ensure compliance when the subject is unconscious! It takes tremendous willpower to change the behavior of sleep. But it's so worth it, because people usually see in a week sleeping elevated. We find the best methods for raising head include using more pillows, using a foam wedge, placing blocks under the legs of the bed frame on the headboard, or using an adjustable bed. Although the ideal position is with the head elevated 10-30 degrees, 10 degrees elevation is good for starters. The legs should be slightly higher, too, one should try to stay on your back as much as possible. The ideal position is one that you would be leaning back in a recliner. (Recliners would be good to use too, but they tend to give less support to poor behind.) Also, be aware that some people will find one more degree of elevation comfortable than the other. People with low blood pressure may have their heads lower than those with higher blood pressure. Others may have some discomfort in neck and shoulder of the new position. However, by experimenting with pillows under their arms, underneath the buttocks (which prevents the slide down the bed), and under the feet and legs, the patient should find a comfortable solution. Furthermore, when taking in the historical sense of the patient perceives The injuries on the neck and throat muscles tight can damage the venous drainage of the brain by compression of the jugular veins by tense muscles. massage Neck and spinal adjustments can help improve overall circulation of the brain. We had a case some stories where there was little or no improvement in the elevation head, but people had a history of neck injuries. Sure, there are times when people feel dizzy and need to lie down to more blood to the head. It could also be better for people to sleep less at night and to compensate for lost sleep with a nap or a nap during the day. This would avoid the extremes of high and low pressure in the brain. But our culture makes it necessary for most people to do all your sleep at once. Sleep, after all, is a cultural issue. The question is to be aware of how you feel and realize that their position relative to the gravity of the body can be a key factor affecting health and disease. We are continuing to investigate the effect of gravity and sleep position on health and encourage professionals to communicate their experiences of patients with us. We also encourage you to read our book, Get It Up! Revealing simple lifestyle surprise that causes migraine disease Alzheimer's, stroke, glaucoma, sleep apnea, impotence, and more! (ISCD Press, 2001), where we discuss the profound implications of this theory, including a long list of references on the pressure and various brain diseases and the effects of gravity on brain circulation. After you see the evidence, you will probably be as surprised as we that sleep research has been to ignore this fundamental aspect of sleep. Sleeping too flat each day may be the largest lifestyle mistake people are making in our culture. Some of the worst diseases of our time may be all in our bed!
